Nonprofit-Government Relationships
The Project to Strengthen Nonprofit-Government Relationships
began in 1999 with support from the Jessie Ball duPont
Fund. The project was a collaboration of UNC-Chapel
Hill’s School of Government and the NC Center
for Nonprofits. The School of Government focused on
relationships at the city and county level, while the
Center worked on state-level relationships.
The intent of the Project to Strengthen Nonprofit-Government
Relationships was to identify and promote ways to help
nonprofit and government organizations work together
to serve the public more effectively.
Our activities included the following:
- Determine how local governments and nonprofits
work together
- Identify obstacles to effective working relationships
- Work with agencies to overcome those obstacles
- Publicize effective practices
- Share what we learn with communities across North
Carolina through conference presentations, workshops,
training exercises, and publications.
Over the history of the project, our partners have
included the Jessie Ball duPont Fund, the NC Center
for Nonprofits, the Jordan Institute for Families, the
NC Association of County Commissioners, and the Z.
Smith Reynolds Foundation.
