ORIENTATION FOR NEW CITY AND COUNTY MANAGERS
The School of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been providing assistance to cities, counties, and state government since the founding of the Institute of Government in 1931. It is the largest university-based local government training and consulting organization in the nation and offers courses, publications, and advising services.

Courses
Each year the school’s Institute of Government (IOG) sponsors up to 200 classes, seminars, and specialized conferences for more than 12,000 public officials. Information about IOG courses is available online. The links there take you to descriptions of courses, including location, instructor, date, and time.
Publications
The School of Government publishes books, manuals, monographs, and research reports for North Carolina public officials and other citizens. These materials provide critical information for state and local officials, state legislators, judges, district attorneys, private attorneys, and others interested in North Carolina local government. The School’s online Publications Catalog provides a complete listing of all titles written and produced by the School and is updated daily. A hard copy edition of the catalog is published annually in July and is free upon request.
Advising
The School of Government faculty annually responds to more than 100,000 telephone, e-mail, and written requests for direct assistance from public officials. A directory of faculty members organized by subject matter will help you locate the most appropriate person to contact. |
