Positions and Interests

Main Page

Introduction

Welcome to the Public Dispute Resolution Program’s first effort at self-guided, online learning of important concepts in negotiation, problem-solving and dispute resolution.

One important technique for managing a conflict productively is to distinguish between the positions disputants take and the interests they seek to satisfy. Interest-based negotiation depends on identifying the interests of the people or groups negotiating. Focusing on interests helps negotiators to move beyond offer and counter-offer bargaining.
