The Center for Public Technology, in conjunction with faculty and staff of the UNC Institute of Government and its extensive governmental experience, conduct applied policy and research projects. The projects are in collaboration with public and private sector partners and address technology issues of vital interests to target audiences.

Technical Assistance/Consulting

The Center provides consulting services to local governments in the area of Technology Planning and Management. Center staff have led Strategic Information Technology Planning projects for several cities and counties, including:

  • Warren County
  • Hoke County
  • Wayne County
  • Randolph County
  • City of High Point

In addition, CPT staff have worked with the staff of the Rural Internet Access Authority to enhance the availability of e-Government services in rural North Carolina. Our staff facilitated the development of e-Community plans for:

  • Beaufort County
  • Cleveland County
  • Lincoln County

CPT staff members are continuing to assist local jurisdictions in the implementation of e-Government projects through the LEG-UP program of the RIAA. To learn more about this program, please visit www.e-nc.org.

Security Best Practices Team

In the fall of 2002, CPT created a 'Security Best Practices Team' of IT professionals from local governments across North Carolina. The team is working to identify 'what works' in local IT security, and to develop a mechanism to share that knowledge with cities and counties to enavble them to secure their infrastructure against natural and un-natural disasters.

Surveys

The Center periodically conducts surveys of North Carolina counties, municipalities, school systems, community colleges, and Councils of Government in various technology-related arenas

2001 E-Government Survey

This survey was funded by the Rural Inrenet Access Authority and conducted to determine the status of technology in the state. The following reports are available in pdf format.

Applied Research

The Center has recently completed Phase One of the Information Technology Investments study for the Information Resource Management Commission. The report (pdf format) is now available online.
